PICKENS AZALEA FESTIVAL 2016

Pickens Azalea Festival Logo

Pickens Azalea Festival Logo

“When the Azaleas are blooming in Pickens, South Carolina the little town celebrates!”

APRIL 15TH & 16TH – 2016

For 32 years Pickens has celebrated spring by throwing an arts and entertainment based and family friendly celebration. Each April, the Azaleas bloom, artisans and crafters come out, and the community joins together to celebrate spring in the city of Pickens. Celebrate is exactly what they do! Presented by the Pickens Azalea Festival Committee and hosted by area nonprofit and civic organizations, the Pickens Azalea Festival boasts the largest gathering of crafters, artisans, and entertainers in the county, and quite possibly the Golden Corner!

The Azalea Festival is also somewhat of large family reunion, giving people who have been away too long, the chance to return and to visit with old friends and family. The streets are filled with local artists and crafters, exciting and varied food vendors, and quaint little shops and eateries. Strolling downtown Pickens during the festival is certainly an exciting and fun filled activity. The festival gives those who have never visited and opportunity to experience this great area during one of the best times to explore and experience all Pickens County has to offer!

National, regional, and local musical artists entertain while local artisans and crafters inspire. Foodies will enjoy regional favorites and the kids will laugh as they partake in the children’s ride area and free children’s creation area. Come browse on of the largest cruise-in in the area and enjoy all that Pickens has to offer! For those who are interested in more physical activity, the annual Pickens Women’s Association 5k is held annually in conjunction with the Pickens Azalea Festival. History buffs will enjoy self-guided tours through historic Pickens or hop a shuttle or enjoy a short drive to the many historic places in and around Pickens County.

There is something for everyone to enjoy each spring at the Pickens Azalea Festival!

WIP “GRASSHOPPER” SHEEP INCOGNITO

NEW SHEEP INCOGNITO PAINTING ON THE EASEL: “GRASSHOPPER”

this is a new painting I’ve started on this weekend – we have two shows happening this weekend in Nappanee, Indiana (Amish Acres Arts & Crafts Festival), and in Dublin, Ohio (Dublin Irish Festival), so we needed to beef up the walls of the booth…

Title: GRASSHOPPER

Size: 24″ x 48″

Media: Oils on canvas

Starting with a quick sketch of Burnt Umber thinned with orange oil, I first established the general shape and figure, then painted the background in.

Initially I thought a black sheep would be the best, but with the background being a bit darker, the contrast will be to weak – so I am adding a warmer, wool colored touch to the sheep, to make it look less cold and stand out more.

A Beautiful Day

It’s a Beautiful Day

Today is the day.
It has been a long time coming – a time wrought with fear, anxiety, discussions, screaming fights, and meltdowns. But, nonetheless, today has come.

Today, we drive.

On The Interstate (yes, this needed to be capitalized).

My daughter has been dreading this event for quite a while – each day the necessity of learning to merge on and off the interstate has come up, there were long discussions and hurt feelings ensuing.

A fear of doing things wrong – is that a teenager thing? A learned response from emotional abuse for much of her life? A self- inflicted horror idea now set firmly in her head?
Whatever the cause, whatever the story – TODAY WE DRIVE.

We have not discussed where we are going – she’s the driver, so we’ll go where she is going.
(Hopefully all the destinations will include firm ground under the wheels, and a big void in front of the car…)

When this is done, we will both have successfully ascended a Mount Everest for both of us. I think the view will be grand from up there….
